When my dad preached this sermon, it was like a direct line to the soul. The message was clear, powerful, and exactly what we need in a world where everything feels like it’s constantly shifting. He reminded us all: Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to me. And he made sure we understood why.
Lesson Text – Psalm 105
The Lesson in Psalm 105
The heart of this message comes from Psalm 105, a 45-verse praise song. But the first five verses? That’s the chorus, the part we’re meant to hold onto:
Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done.
This psalm calls us to look back and celebrate everything God has done for His people. It recounts how He delivered them from destruction, famine, and slavery through the dispensations of Abraham, Joseph, and Moses. And it reminds us that God’s faithfulness didn’t stop there. From the judges to the kings, from the exile to the prophets, God kept showing up.
But then came the greatest dispensation of all: His Son, Jesus Christ.
The Ultimate Deliverance
In John 3:16-17, Jesus himself gives us the ultimate promise:
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.
Through Jesus, salvation became a gift for everyone. No matter your background, status, or history, His love extends to you. Paul confirms this in Galatians 3:26-29:
For ye are all children of God by faith in Christ Jesus… There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
What Jesus Does for Us
In my dad’s words, Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to me. Not because of material blessings or external circumstances, but because of the way Jesus changes hearts and lives. He doesn’t just deliver us from situations—He delivers us from ourselves. My dad shared how Jesus:
- Took jealousy and envy out of his heart.
- Took foul language out of his mouth.
- Took evil and lascivious thoughts out of his mind.
- Replaced his arrogance with humility.
And he doesn’t stop there.
God Specializes
Here’s the incredible thing: God specializes in doing what no one else can do. My dad broke it down like this:
- God specializes in healing the sick.
- God specializes in mending broken homes.
- God specializes in freeing loved ones from prison.
- God specializes in delivering us from accidents, addictions, grief, and depression.
- God specializes in miracles—like the Nigerian girls kidnapped by terrorists who were later freed and now attend the American University of Nigeria.
God’s power and love are limitless. He shows up in ways we can’t imagine, doing things no one else can.
What’s Your Chorus?
Psalm 105 challenges us to keep our own chorus of praise alive:
Give praise to the Lord for what He has done to deliver us, and pray to Him for the blessings He will give us in the future.
So, here’s the question my dad’s message left me reflecting on: What’s the chorus of your life? When you look back on how God has delivered you, healed you, or carried you through, what’s the song of praise that comes to mind?
Take a moment to think about it. Write it down. Share it. Or simply thank God for it. Because when we pause to reflect on His goodness, we’re reminded all over again: Jesus really is the best thing that ever happened to us.
TJ’s Take
This sermon from my dad hits on some common reasons why people welcome the impact that belief in Jesus has on their hearts. For a lot of Christians, Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to them. For others, it’s the feeling of belonging to something bigger than themselves. While Jesus is the endgame for church, I believe that there is some merit to the latter.
